Steve Newport is lucky he can talk about his early onset Alzheimer's disease.
"I wasn't making any sense," Newport said.
Thanks to his wife, Dr. Mary Newport, he's not only making sense now, he's happier.
But it hasn't been an easy road. Steve, 59, failed to get into clinical trials, so Mary researched and found out some of the clinical drugs to treat Alzheimer's are made from coconut oil.
She started mixing some into her husband's breakfast and says that improved his memory tests.
"The day before the coconut oil he scored a 14 out of 30, not enough to get in the clinical trial. And the day he started the coconut oil, later that day he scored an 18 out of 30, which was enough to get into that trial," Mary said. "And it was a pretty significant increase from the day before."
But why would coconut oil help?
St. Petersburg Times reporter Steve Nohlgren has been researching the topic for a while now.
"We don't really know what causes Alzheimer's, but one of the real early signs is that brain cells lose their ability to process sugar, which is their primary fuel, and they die," Nohlgren said. "The theory behind coconut oil is it can induce the body to create an alternate fuel to keep those cells alive."
But before trying coconut oil at home -- Alzheimer's patients should check with their doctor because there can be some serious risks.

Any research that provides additional insight into Alzheimer’s is critical to finding a cure.
It is also important for patients and families affected by Alzheimer’s to consider participating in clinical studies. One such study is the ICARA Study (www.icarastudy.com), whose goal is to explore if an investigational drug, called Bapineuzumab, can help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. Clinical studies that test new treatments are the best chance we have for fighting this disease.
Thanks for the information. I will look into that website.

It's been a year or so since Dr. Newport's incredible report, and I have not found YET ANOTHER SINGLE CASE of patients with AD who would improve with coconut oil or coconut milk. A Google search (which can find anything) yields NOTHING, except endless repetitions of the same story. PLEASE DO NOT PLAY AROUND WITH ALZHEIMER'S PATIENTS' HEALTH. OR PROVIDE MORE EVIDENCE!
I thought this story was interesting and that is why I posted it. There are so many other things that you should be doing to prevent AD. Coconut oil obviously worked for the Dr.s husband but may not work for anyone else. It's worth a try though.
If you were speaking directly to me about not playing around with Alzheimer's patients health, you should check further in to my blog. This blog is about my dad who has AD. I DON'T MESS AROUND!! Good luck with your findings.

Krista, kudos to you for your barvery with this.
For your anonymous commentator please read this... coconut oil may not be the panacea for all but give it a go, unlike every other pharma drug you will get for any disease it will not give you unwanted side effrects and may help your overall health in many ways. It is anti viral, anti bacterial and anti microbial and can be used for many different things. Used with a whole food, fresh and organic diet its amazing what can be 'cured'. But first you must open your mind...fix the patient who has the disease not the disease that has the patient!
There's a 6 part interview of Dr. Mary Newport on YouTube. Here's the link
Thank you so much! I look forward to watching it.
