Our Alzheimer's TV Interview

My sister, Kim and I were excited that we had the opportunity to be interviewed on AM Arizona to talk about Alzheimer's.

I am so grateful to ComForcare Senior Services for giving me great tips over this last year that I was able to share with all of you.

Your interview was very informative and enlightening! It's good to know that you two are taking the initiative to educate the public about the preventative measures of Alzheimer's.

Krista... I had no idea that your Dad had a stroke! I will be praying for him!

TIPS

Human growth and intellectual development - DHA plays a very important role during fetal development, early infancy, and old age. High concentrations of DHA are found in the brain and increases 300-500% in an infant's brain during the last trimester of pregnancy. Adding DHA to a pregnant mothers diet may be beneficial for the fetus's brain development. Elderly people should also take EPA DHA, because as we get older, our bodies form less DHA and EPA, which may cause less mental focus and cognitive function. Taking EPA DHA may also help with mental abnormalities, such as Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia.

Turmeric Spice
Rates of Alzheimer's are significantly lower in certain parts of the world, especially India. Turmeric, a spice found in many curries and an essential part of the Indian diet, has very important properties that have been linked with Alzheimer's prevention. Turmeric is an antioxidant and seems to protect the brain from the build up of the plaques that are believed to cause the disease.

Teach a Lesson

In life, we have all kinds of teachers, first-grade teachers, biology teachers, ballet teachers. While they may have been responsible for teaching us how to read, how to dissect a frog, or how to do the perfect plie, they also taught us perhaps one of the most important lessons about aging: Teaching can save your brain. You're far more likely to retain information if you have to explain it to somebody else. The degree to which you can effectively explain information indicates how well you've actually learned it.

The lesson: Take advantage of mentoring opportunities whether it's instructing a class in your favorite hobby at a community college, or inviting the neighborhood teens over to teach them how to change a tire or make a cake?. Teach the next generation, and you'll power up your own generator.
