Today, I spoke with Vikas Shyam and Dr. Roopam Shyam, owners of ComForcare Senior Services in Plano, Texas.
We had a great conversation about violence in Alzheimer's loved ones. My father has recently become combative when it comes to showering and changing. Vikas and Roopam gave me some good tips for anyone in this position. They said to have them checked by a physician for possible infections that could lead to this type of situation.
Listen to the interview for more tips.
If you or someone you know has Alzheimer's, needs help and lives in Plano, TX or the Collin and Southeast Denton County area, give Vikas and Roopam a call. They can provide help!
Enjoy!

Hi, I'd like to subscribe to your RSS feed, but the link doesn't go anywhere. You might want to get that fixed.
My mom got very combative about showering too. I read somewhere that Alzheimers patients get scared of bathing because they're worried about falling or drowning. They also start having perception issues with their vision so the tub might look SOOO deep and scary to them. I always tried to make it very bright in the bathroom (i.e. daytime on a bright sunny day plus lights), spa-like with nice towels and soap and the promise (and delivery!) of a special treat afterwards like a really good lunch with all her favourites.
Some facilities "throw" the patient in a shower chair naked and they fight, so the poor Alzheimer's patient gets all bruised up and sprayed in the face. Shampoo goes in their eyes, and they scream all the way through the shower. It is very upsetting to me, as I think if the aides would not be in such a hurry and take a little time with them, this would not happen. It breaks your heart. I am a caregiver, and I have witnessed first hand the attitudes and actions of the aides in the so-called "nice" private facilities as well as in the medicaid facilities. Even the expensive facilities are guilty. One of the "nice" ones is Arden Courts in Richardson.
